Who makes the highest quality Russian Zagreb pieces?

I have a pretty nice set from Chessbazaar. However I see that H.O.S. has a wonderful set(though pricey)with the King's Finials interchangeable and the overall quality seems superb(I think).

Anyone have thoughts regarding this set, from these,or other manufacturers?

Thanks in advance.

NOJ make Dubrovnik repros, not Zagreb sets AFAIK. I prefer the CB Zagreb to the HoS.

The name "Russian Zagreb" is silly, in part because Zagreb is in Croatia, not Russia, and partly because this piece design is neither Russian nor Yugoslavian.

I have the House of Staunton Zagrebs, and I am not very fond of them. They look good on photos, but they are too tall, slender and unbalanced to play well. A better choice would be this set from House of Chess:

Please be warned, however, that they are just a tiny bit too big to fit comfortably on standard 57mm/2.25" square boards.

House of Chess sells another set with the same name in a smaller size, but unfortunately that one is not nearly as attractive.

I too am a former owner of a HoS Zagreb '59 set.  The pictures were appealing and I was just starting to scratch the opposite color finial itch.  But the set I found to be chunky and unwieldy.  I sold the set and will keep the HoS Dubrovnik set in spite of its oversize king and nondescript queen.

I got this one from Your Move Chess and Games (chessusa.com):. 3.25K on Maple/Walnut 1.75" Drueke board.

I don't have a nice wood board with 2.25" squares, so I ordered the pieces to fit the board.

I will eventually get a full size Dubrovnik set, probably HoS - can't afford Noj. And then I'll get the 2.25" board from Colorado Woodworker. I'm so spoiled with the Drueke board, purchased 20+ years ago to fit a 3.25" French Lardy set (heirloom pieces belonging to my late father-in-law).  I have a couple of full sized silicone boards, but there's nothing like a good solid wood board.

No... the place sells Venezuelan Beaver Cheese.

I just happen to like the design of these knights. Character of the knights are the first thing I look for in a set.

I think (and correct me if I'm wrong) the "Russian" part in the name may be referring to the opposite colored tops on certain pieces, which is a feature of quite a few sets which were invented in Eastern Europe.

But you are absolutely right regarding the origin of the Zagreb set. I understand it was invented by House of Staunton back in the '80s or '90s. As such, I guess its origin is Alabama (HOS is based in Alabama), so about as far away from Russia (or Yugoslavia) as you can get happy.

Personally, I love the Zagreb set. In my view, it's only exceeded in terms of aesthetics by the Dublin Calvert pieces, which are, to me, the most beautiful chess set ever designed.

There´s a lot of high quality indian Zagreb pieces...

And it´s all about the knights.

I have owned a HoS Zagreb ‘59 set since Frank Camaratta released it, a good number of years ago.

I do like the looks of the set, but I prefer to not play with it. The problem I have with it is the base diameter of the pieces is too small for my tastes.

I did buy the set from the House of Chess. Those pieces are more hefty in build and handling. I liked that set quite a bit, but alas I sold it in a moment of weakness.

I have an ebonized-boxwood Zagreb set from American Chess Equipment. Beautiful and flawless.

I have bought two Zagreb type sets....The first from C.B. which I gifted to a family member and the second from The Chess Store....The second one was Padauk and Boxwood and is carved and finished to a higher quality than the C.B. set. Both are very nice, but the one from The Chess Store(which I bought just before Covid) is exceptional.I believe they call it The Yugoslavia Set.
