Wooden Chess Set for Tournaments

Sort:
German_MagnusCarlsen

Hey guys,

Recently I have been looking into buying a wooden chess set for the USCF rated tournaments that I play in. The board should have either 2 1/8 inch or 2 1/4 inch squares, be made out of wood, and preferably have notation on the edges as I am using it in tournaments. Also, the board should not have the ability to fold.

The pieces should be either German Knight style, French Lardy, club style or something similar. The king should be 3.75 inches tall. I would love for the black pieces to be black, not brown.

German Knight:

French Lardy:

Club:

My budget is about $130 US dollars.

This would be the perfect set if the board were not folding: http://www.houseofstaunton.com/ultimate-chess-set-combination-ii.html

Here is what I have so far: https://thechessstore.com/german-knight-staunton-chess-set-in-ebonized-boxwood-boxwood-3-75-king/

Please comment and let me know what you recommend! I would especially appreciate links!

Hello German MagnusCarlsen

9kick9

Its up to you as to which Chess Pieces you want. They all look fine to me. The Poland made Board is great & will last forever if not abused. I have 2 over 30 years old & they are like new. Wegiel makes good Chess Equipment.!

The House of Staunton combo that you have linked to is the one I would go with.

I own 4 of those folding boards and they are great.  Two of those boards are well over 10 years old and they are still in great condition.

Seeing that you want the dark pieces to be black, that combo looks perfect for what you want in board, set and price.

I have a board and pieces that matches exactly what you want and I got for extremely cheap.

This was the International Series (ebonized) from chesscafe.com (was on sale for $12 at the time.  Is regularly about $40 I think).

I see that this says out-of-stock now.  Bummer.  Here's a (presumably) better version of the set for (sadly) about double the price:

or this one for $60:

Paired with this chessboard from Wegiel also for $40. (via Amazon): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Z9CH7K?ref_=cm_cr-mr-title

Which as you can see in my photo, looks way better than their photograph shows.

Here's a not unavailable version of that same board, I think.  Same price.  http://www.amazon.com/Chess-Board-No-Professional-Tournament/dp/B001JK23FU/ref=sr_1_18

The Classic Series from HOS might appeal to you.

To my knowledge only The House of Staunton, www.houseofstaunton.com, and the Rochester Chess Center, www.chessset.com, sell these boards as folding.

I bought 2 of my folding, wooden boards from The Rochester Chess Center and the others from The House of Staunton.

This might be out of your price range but it's a beautiful set. No notation though so it probably wont work. The pieces look to be the same as Crappov (felt bottom, weighted, competion size).

You can find cheap wooden tournament sets at ebay or at chessbazaar.com. You can also find good quality sets which will cost you more at official staunton. I recommend chess bazaar because CB offers a full range of attractively priced wooden chess sets btw the regulations for a tournament chess set are squares on the chess board should be 2 ¼ inches from one side to the other, and the king should be from 3 ¾ to 4 ¼ inches tall.
