Hi there,

I never used a chess clock before and I'd like to know what is you experience on several different brands and models. Is there one particular clock you were very pleased to use ? or other you don't want to use ever again?

Feel free to share photos of your own equipments !

Thanks in advance for you feedbacks

This is such an awesome thread: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/vintage-chess-clocks

Thank you for the links. The Topic on vintage chess clocks is very nice.

But for those you who took part to in a tournament, what was your personal feelings about the various chess clock models ?

Eyechess

As you are in France, I would recommend the DGT 3000 clock.

It will serve you well for any kind of tournament.

If you were on this side of the pond, there are a couple of clocks sold here that might be better, but the DGT 3000 will work just fine.

Eyechess

Well, I agree that the DGT 2010 is also a good clock.

At the DGT shop the DGT 2010 is 80 Euros and the DGT 3000 is 95 Euros.  That is only a 15 Euro difference.

If you are buying a clock, the extra 15 Euros is not that much more for the much higher quality clock.

Make sure the clock you buy supports the time control you need.

Europeans will find the best deals for chess equipment in Germany.

Schach Niggemann sells the DGT 2010 for 45.95€ and the DGT 3000 for 20.00€ more: https://www.schachvertrieb.eu/en/sets-boards/game-clocks/dgt-2010-sonderedition-schach-niggemann.html

TopSchach sells it for 49.99€ and they charge less for shipping: http://www.topschach.de/2010-neue-version-p-1710.html

I've bought from both and find Schach Niggemann's service better, but both are OK.

I too recommend the DGT 2010 for the OP, unless he is thinking of purchasing an e-board in the future.

I've only recently started using clocks, and bought a cheap DGT 1002 for games against a colleague. Nothing special, but works fine for my situation.

Nice feedback pal. I'm about to offer the DGT starter pack with the DGT1002 clock to my son for his birthday this month. Everything is wrapped with the curly ribbon so I'm glad this model is fine.

@burke3gd: the prices are very interesting ! If the DGT1002 is too basic I think I will definitly go for those shops. Thank you for the tips!

For my private purpose once a year or so i own a DGT3000. wink.png

At our chess club we are happy with our DGT2010 clocks. Older cheap DGT Easy Plus clocks were used for blitz are more for private than club use. Our older "silver" chess clocks used for tournament play before are far worse than the DGT2010.

When reading the DGT1002 manual i see that both players always get the same time settings. Sometimes it is practical to play with time odds, e. g. playing against much weaker players with 2 against 5 minutes. One also can't play "step blitz" (5 against 5 minutes in the first game, winner gets one minute off for the second game, overall winner is the one who wins the first game with one minute). Maybe these funny things come much faster than all other restrictions of that clock.

What ever the Brand/Model check it as soon as it arrives in the Mail. I  let it sit before I used it for a month ( 21 day return policy of USCF Sales), and discovered only one side worked.

Nice feedback ! Actually I was about to buy a DGT Easy Plus, then I saw the DGT Brown Pack.

When I play with my son I use to remove the Queen and a rook : it gives him better chance to win and forces me to pay more attention to my own pieces.

I didn't know the "step blitz" but it seems very fun and well balanced !

@sloitdan: Oh crap ! I'm very sorry for you. It happened to me once too meh.png

ventudius

That's easy.

The DGT XL.

Unfortunately DGT discontinued this clock in favor for the DGT3000. But I'm sure you can still find a new one on ebay.

Bfighter4935

@ventudius: The DGT3000 seems to be more up-to-date, plus it is cheaper.

I don't see the benefit of buying the DGT XL. Why do you prefer the XL model ?

Bfighter4935

@john_chandler: I offered my kid the DGT brown pack with the DGT1002 clock included.

Very nice device and very easy to use. Thanks alot for your feedback thumbup.png
