Without naming specific sets, I would love a fine inlaid wood board and a set of 3-3/4" (K) pieces with visible wood grain - perhaps rosewood. The main reason I haven't bought such an expensive set is because many light pieces are boxwood and do not show significant wood grain. Most boxwood pieces appear almost like plastic, though there are exceptions. I also do not care for the "ebonized" pieces in which the wood is coated to mask the woodgrain. For that reason, I'd have to see the set in person before committing a lot of money for what would be essentially a display set.
Your dream board & pieces

this is my dream chess piece:

I agree. Those knights seem hideous to me, but to each his own.

A small, metallic travel chessboard (with holes in each square to plug in the pieces) and the pieces themselves out of solid gold and platinum.

I like the N's, it's the rest of that set I can't stand. Sorry. I understand that not everyone wants mainstream Staunton design, but this is too busy IMHO.

But I get by with these:

I like this set. I like the knights and I really like the little "caps" on the pawns. http://www.chessbazaar.com/chess-pieces/new-triple-weighted-staunton-chess-set-bud-rose-wood.html
Not saying it's the ultimate set, but I do think it's a good looking set.

An old HOS offering. Brazilian rosewood and quilted maple. Just beautiful, though I'd prefer a much simpler and restrained framing. No problem with that field of 64.
As for pieces, ebony and boxwood look best. The above is an antique Jaques "Lasker," though I'd prefer something slightly earlier, like a "Morphy."

Each has his personal tastes and to me the knights and kings are lacking in this set.
For a few dollars more I would prefer the set being played in the current Anand - Carlsen match.
If you could have any board and any set of pieces to go with it, what combo would you have?
