Sorry in advance for the long post. But thank you so much to whoever takes the time to read and respond with advice ❤️
Have any of you tried the Magnus Trainer or Play Magnus apps on the app store (iOS or Android) and paid for the subscription and gone through the lessons?
Has it helped? I kinda suck at studying chess on my own, I get overwhelmed with the amount of YouTube videos, lessons on here (I've taken alot of the chess.com "beginner to pro" lessons on my old account), I can't decide what openings to learn, and I learn the moves and then try to play them but I don't learn the ideas behind the openings like what the opening is trying to accomplish and then implementing that. after making the opening moves I just kinda try my best at positional play, but I suck at long term plans or how to even form them. So I just keep trying to fortify my position, and maybe try a tactic or two if I see one, but usually end up making a mistake or blundering and then I fall apart)... I get stuck not knowing what lesson to watch, browsing and browsing. Then I give up and try to play, and then do what I described above, then stop and try to study, try to pick a lesson, not sure what to watch or do, give up and play a game, repeat ad nauseam...
I need a structured lesson plan that kinda caters to my skill level and then works on my weaknesses and progresses by continuously testing my skill level and what I need to work on.
But, I can't pay for a tutor or coach. If I buy things on the app store I can pay using the att cellular plan (adds the charges to the bill) cus we are on my wife's parents' plan and they are super loaded and don't care if I add 5 or 10 dollars to the bill each month for a subscription (chill guys. I don't take advantage of them).
So I downloaded play Magnus and Magnus Trainer and I'm going through the free 7 day trial on Magnus Trainer and the lessons seem kinda strange.. not really in depth just quick little bits of information about certain opening moves and the names of them.. I haven't really done to much though.
I played a free game on the play Magnus app, and I won, and it seems cool because apparently you play and it gives you tips and advice and adjusts to your skill level. Which seems like what I need.
So has anyone tried these apps and been successful at really improving in your chess?
Or can anyone give me advice on improving my chess?
Hi I’m a low rated player and have the free version of Magnus trainer app so take what I say with a grain of salt. I find the lessons are really helpful because you learn concepts you can apply to matches. But there is actually a huge benefit to playing the silly games on the app. If you play the games and download a bunch of puzzle apps it could change how you look at the board or at least it has for me and I’ve been noticing slow imprisonments
