Getting to a 1200 rating, staying there and going over it.

I have been playing chess for almost eight years, but with a break in between of course. My problem is, with all the game types(bullet, blitz and standard) i seem to have a problem maintaining a 1200+ rating. This haunts me because i easily beat some players rated higher than that, but still find it hard to maintain a 1200+ rating. Any advice is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance:)
