Learn how to play against the Queen's Gambit and/or mainline white replies.  Get used to it because 2.c4 isn't going away anytime soon.

I personally prefer 2.Nf3 against 1...Nf6 because of its flexibility.  Against a Benoni for example I can play Nc3 right away so a pawn isn't occupying an ideal square for a knight as well as giving piece support to the d5, and against 2...g6 I can wait for a good time to throw in c4 after either Bg5, g3, or whatever I feel like at the moment.  This avoids the sterile and boring (from either side) Grunfeld as well as the dangerous Budapest.

When I started out in chess I always played 1.d4 d5 2.c4. My opponents would capture my pawn, I'd play e4 and then I'd get my pawn back later. It seemed easy for me at the time because I didn't have trouble getting the other pieces developed while my opponents did. And even when they could get their pieces out they had trouble finding moves after that. Then one day they all stopped taking the pawn... Yell

OK so it's not really bad to play 1.d4 d5 2.c4 dxc4. It's actually ok as long as you don't try to keep it and I don't think there's any reason why someone couldn't play it. But my opponents and I always found it a lot easier to play against 1.d4 with 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 just protecting the pawn and figuring out what to do next.

The Queen's Gambit is an awesome opening, the only one I really use in my limited chess knowledge of openings. Although it has the highest winning percentage of any opening, it has a lot of traps as well. Check out the Albin counter-gambit, or the Lasker trap. Although traps are great for an unsuspecting player, many of them can be foiled with the right move, so make sure you know the line well. If you want a safe reply without the risk of a trap gone wrong, I suggest the knight f6 (Grunfeld defense) followed by e6 for black. You can play g6 and fianchetto your bishop, but it's a more complicated set up and you should only play it if you know the line well. You can also play the Slav defense, or Tarrasch defense, but I think the Grunfeld has a higher win percentage for black. Either way I would pick one defense and know all the lines well before moving to a new system. It's good to be well balanced, but knowing all the lines of one system is better than knowing a few lines of many systems for the same opening.

RomyGer

Please, HarryZ, post 8 : explain what you ment to say : 1.d4 d5  2.c4 b5 ? (as you say 2. c4 )

Or 1.d4 b5 ?  ( because you say 1. ... b5 )

( 2. ) c4 is not a "winning move".

1.d4  2.c4  IS CHEATING AT LOW RATINGS because many traps. watch video on youtube.

ok not at expert level is not cheating. but low players fall in trap. i feel bad for cheating

RomyGer

The Polish Defence is either 1. d4 b5  or 1. d4 Nf6  2.Nf3 b5

Aleksander Wagner (1868-1942) launched this against Kuhn in 1913; he published it in 1914 when he was living in Poland.-

Love how he pronounces Rapid as rape it at 42 seconds, lol.

Not exactly, Yuri. That video teaches you how to avoid these traps, too.
