Are there certain variations or lines you can gravitate toward to be able to be more aggressive in this system?

Just check out Simon Williams' (GingerGM) Londen System videos on Youtube; I've been playing the London System ever since and the games you get are awesome. Really aggresive opening if you use your DSB to exchange on g3 to open up your h-file, put your LSB on d3 and castle Queenside (or not!).

That is far too general a question for there ever to be a good response to that.

Which lines are you having difficulties generating play against? Let's start with that and go from there...

If this answers your questions, the subject line is an oxymoron!

No. None. The London system is the least aggressive, most closed opening. Inevitably all the pieces get traded off and an equal endgame is reached. There are no tactics, no attacks, sacrifices, or anything interesting. The only reason anyone plays it is to try to bore their opponent into submission.

Very smart opening. Got a rook in 5 moves.

Please teach me how to get a Queen in 10 moves!!!

Yeah, exactly!  Talk about pure idiocy!  Of course, most that have what her handle claims are missing things higher up!

I have seen many other moronic posts by her on other opening threads, like 1.d4 e5? 2.dxe5 f6? 3.exf6 Qe7?? 4.fxg7?? (Take the queen, fool!) Bxg7.

Of course, here, any clown would know to play 3...Nf6!

ThrillerFan

No, my English is fine!  Better than you millenials that never learned English and only speak in text.  Trust me, I know!  My wife is a high school teacher and today's high school clown can't even identify the subject, direct object, or verb in a sentence!

They also have no clue what a preposition is, or that sentences can't end in a preposition, or what a clause is, or how to punctuate.  It is amazing how stupid people are when they think post 9 is bad English!

It's too bad an interesting thread was taken over by trolling. Anyways, as per the OP's original question, there ARE ways of playing the London System aggressively, although keep in mind black can always steer the game into lines with more boring play. I highly recommend taking a look at this blog post to see how some interesting sacrificial lines in the London play out. https://www.chess.com/blog/IndreRe/london-system-the-greek-gift-bxh7

As @ThrillerFan mentioned, the question is a bit silly. The goal of the London is to safely develop your pieces before engaging in any aggressive action. This approach allows black to do the same, which means there is no opening advantage for white here. You are looking to out play your opponent in the middle game if you play this opening. If you want something sharper, the London (or its cousins the Colle and Torre) are not what you are looking for.

Yep this pretty well sums it up

yeah

1414 Rating, and the word "aggressive" was all i needed to see.

Lol.

There are lines in the London where all sorts of things happen. The problem with the OP's question isn't that there are no dynamic lines in the opening, as someone who has no experience in the opening would claim, but rather that the question is so broad that the OP gives no hint which variations are giving him trouble.

London is strong but not because of being aggressive. Its main idea is flexibility, getting a solid center and controlling key squares.

Some food for thought for those making sweeping statements.

One of the most critical lines that can occur in the London System is the following (and white has a number of other choices in meeting this variation as well):

Another important line in modern London theory:

KID setup is incredibly boring too I suppose:

I am not even necessarily claiming any opening advantage in the above lines, although I'd prefer to play white in each case, particularly against ill-prepared opponents.

I am claiming that the assertion "the London system is the least aggressive, most closed opening. Inevitably all the pieces get traded off and an equal endgame is reached. There are no tactics, no attacks, sacrifices, or anything interesting" is the sort of universal statement that can never be right about almost any opening, and definitely isn't right about this one...

As someone else mentionned, check out Simon William's youtube channel. He is a tremendously aggressive GM who plays the london system.

@BobbyTalparov With all due respect, I can tell you don't know what you're talking about sad.png. You claim 6...cxd4 is a mistake, even though it's become an established mainline:

The second thing you said was that 4...e6 is a mistake after 4. dxc5. I am guessing you didn't have the sense to do an ounce of research, which would have shown you that the moves e6 and Nc6 transpose (and Qa5+ is the arguably worst of the three moves).

And thirdly you claimed dead equality in a position that many GMs have been happy to play for a win. Hell, I don't argue that's necessarily better for white, but it sure has much more nuance than you appreciate.

For the record, the reason I asked such a broad question was to start a conversation about it. Not looking for 1 specific reply
