Agressive response to 1.e4?

I've decided that I will try to revamp my style in order to improve both my tactical abilities and attacking skills. Up to this point I have played 1...e6 against 1.e4 and I was trying to discover a sharper alternative that I could use. It doesn't necessarily have to be theory heavy and I just want something that I can play to give white problems if I can take the initiative. I know that 1...c5 is one option but what about 1...e5? Would e5 be considered an aggressive response against 1.e4 and if so, what variations would I be able to use to give myself attacking chances against white?

edit: Yes I realize that I misspelled "aggressive" and I'd appreciate it if people would overlook that and just answer the question I asked in my post.

There's always the Center Counter defense.

Have you explored 1. e4 e5 2. (any move) Nf6 3. (any move) Ke7

I have found this opening to shock most players through its revolutionary concepts. My current stats with it are:

wins: 8

losses: 115

draws: 0

I would like to get an ECO code for it. It is called "do the doo doo"

sebas4life

try d4.

Or 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5!?

There's the Center-Counter, the Sicilian, the Caro-Kann, et cetera. Why quit the French, though? It's pretty Aggressive.

Well I'm kind of looking for a defense that forces white to be careful throughout the game and for the opportunity to strike quickly if they make a mistake. I find the lack of space in the French makes it more difficult to do this and I always end up having to grind out the win in the endgame. I'm looking for something that will allow me to break through if white makes a mistake and my main concern is whether or not 1...e5 is suitable for this purpose or if I will be forced to play the Sicilian if I want to play this kind of game.

Sicilian, ftw!

I prefer e5 against e4, and I think it's plenty aggressive -- in fact, probably more so than its reputation.  If White doesn't tread carefully in most openings, the tide can quickly and easily turn in Black's favor.

For specific variations, I'd recommend the Two Knights Defense against 3.Bc4, and against the Ruy Lopez, take your pick as suits you of the Schliemann Defense, Open Defense, or Marshall Attack.

Honestly, though, if you've been playing the French defense all this time, you might want to go a bit cautiously down the "aggressive" path.  A more open defense will do you well, but careful you don't get so overzealous in your choice of openings that you're biting off more than you can chew.

Keyif

I searched my dbase and cannot find one reference to that being played. I would suggest the vienna if you like different openings.

Yeah, I'm trying to avoid using the Sicilian if I can find the same types of games by responding with 1...e5. However, if the Sicilian is my only option, I'm not completely averse to learning it. I already know a little about the Sveshnikov Sicilian from a small amount of time I spent playing it...but for now I'd rather see if 1...e5 is a plausible option for counter-attacking play.

Petroff?  You dictate the terms of the game from the beginning.  It's reputation is drawish, but with us types I doubt that's a problem.

Alekhine's defense perhaps

Simply put, I agree with mhtraylor on the Center Counter Defense for Black.

I agree with this.  I played the French for awhile (about a year) and then I switched to the accelerated dragon.  Needless to say, it was like jumping into the deep end to learn how to swim, but it also opened up a whole world of chess I didn't previously know.

pvmike

what line of the french do you play? I find the winawer variation of the french to be aggressive. 1...e5 can be aggressive but it some what depends what white plays.

I like Sicilian the best.  It has awesome tactical concepts of attacking the center with radical force.  It can mess up white's formation like a toxic-waste dump.

NesimTR

When I played the French I tended to stick with the Classical against 3.Nc3, but most of my games ended up being played against the Advance. In the lines I played my position tended to be cramped so I didn't really get much of an opportunity to attack and had to wait for white to over-extend to win.

Nelso_125

Certainly the Sicilian, try it out, there are several variations of it.

bobmacambob

i would definitely suggest the caro-kann or the French. Although personally I play the hyper-accellerated dragon, I have lost litterally about 99% of the games with white against the Caro-Kann and the French. But that is just probably because I don't know the opening theory in that in the first place

Naedling

I'm just learning the Sicilian; I find the French too weak.
