ah do so many people hate the London system and think it's bad?

Because if White plays solidly and doesn't make any ambitious moves it can be very hard to generate winning chances as the second player.
Also, far too many White players play it against everything. It's pretty lame to play four different people, play four different set-ups as Black and yet face the same London set-up every time.

The London is not necessarily a bad opening, but it is not particularly ambitious. The bigger problem is that lower rated players play it as a system and will not react to any black moves so they put themselves in a worse position very easy. I would argue that it stunts your growth as a low rated player.
As far as black hating the London, I guess their problem is that they are also playing on auto-pilot and not taking what their opponent is giving them. If white does not want the initiative, fine, black can have it. Either that or you play a Stonewall as black and white will have a miserable time getting anything.
At the high level they have a much greater understanding of positions so they don't play it as a system and play accordingly to how black responds.
I for one would rather face the London over a main line Colle. The complications in the latter opening are very difficult compared to how I can get easy equality against the London.

Cali_boy613 I think his videos are decent and while they may give lines that are a bit out of reach they do lay the foundation for the London system and helps us come to the checkmate our own way.I think the London system is a solid opening that can be combined with the Greek gift to give a tactical game.

@dpnorman I'm not sure that 2. Bf4...c5 is so great for Black after 3. dxc5!? as shown by NM @2Bf41-0

its because I often see this happen at our club and I'm sure the berlin endgame is far richer and more entertaining that this

I like it and I’d still be playing it if it weren’t for the fact that at club level waaay too many people play it. I’m not worried about black getting too much practice against it, it’s just that it’s so cliche I’m embarrassed to roll it out.

I think most of the "hate" is tongue in cheek. It has given us some wonderful memes.
lol Awesome post. Made my morning. And I think your comment is right.
