Omega Gambit

Fiveofswords: I think that your line is exactly what White should avoid in the Alekhine, since an overextended center is meant to collapse (here, with breaks such as ...b6 or ...d6). Actually, my message rather concerned the main line (Modern variation).
Black is not obliged to play this 4...g6(which is not really good to be honest)
It's one of the best ways to play against the modern variation...engines like it and it scores better than dxe5 or Bg4. So, yeah. Obviously black isn't obligated to play the g6 line but to say it isn't good is just incorrect.

Right now, though, I think 4...dxe5 is more preferred at higher levels than 4...Bg4 or 4...g6, though obviously any of the three moves is playable. Really, I think it just comes down to a matter of taste.
Yeah, Alekhine experts seem to be going for 4...de 5 Nxe5 c6 and 5...g6 these days.
I usually respond to the Alekhine with the Modern Variation (I don't like 4.c4, it weakens d4 too much), and the more I play it, the more I realize that the knight on d5 is often incredibly annoying. I don't really want to learn too much theory, so I was wondering if there was a simple way, a general rule to deal with it (again, I don't like playing c4, because my center often collapses quickly with ...dxe5 - but there might be a right time to play it or something).
