An Anti-Dutch: Staunton Gambit

The Staunton Gambit is one of the most interesting ways to play against the Dutch. Instead of the usual plan of preparing e4 in the Classical Dutch, white busts it out on move 2 to speed up the development of white's pieces. Of course, this pawn sacrifice is usually only temporary, as black often ends up with a weak pawn on e4.

As someone who has played the Staunton Gambit both as white and as black, I would say that it is a tricky opening to play against, but it is easy to mess up as white as well.

So, what do you think about the Staunton Gambit?

I love this opening. I've gotten some terrific wins with the Staunton (and plenty of losses!). I wish more people played the Dutch so I could give it a shot more often. This is another one of those openings that was considered a dangerous weapon in the 19th century, but has since been defanged thanks to tons of theory. However, for folks on my subterranean level, it's still a good try, and a lot of fun, too!
