You need an interface, SCID or Arena are free, and for free you can also download millions of masterlevel games to build your own opening database(s).  You gan also get really dood free engines for these.

Takes a while to learn to set up and use properly, but totally worth it

Older chessbase versions (CB Light 2009 or something) are free.

With all due respect, I believe te new free stuff is better and more comprehensive than the old chessbase. Just my opinion....

I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to do, but I'll throw my two cents in here (my advice may not even be worth two cents, though).

As far as free database software is concerned, I think Scid vs. PC (or the slightly older Scid) is probably better than Arena. Arena's good for engine tournaments, but it's not too great as database software. I've also heard of Chess Position Trainer, although I've never used it. Version 3.3 is the older, completely free version, and version 4.1 is the newer version that has a slightly crippled, free version and a more comprehensive paid version. (I don't think the paid version is very expensive.) CB Light 2009 might be OK, but it's somewhat crippled (basically a read-only version with a limited database size).
