I am just wondering I have got an average centipawn loss of 40 and i wonder what is a good average centipawn loss and can you tell me yours?

thegreat_patzer

if you have the computer analyze your game (and every game that is play on lichess is computer analyzed)... the computer will generate "centipawn" loss, as small positional mistakes that were slightly worse that the computers top choice.

In short, this number gives you some hints on how well you are playing positional chess.

on the other hand...

  •  tactical mistakes Are a much bigger deal, and I think we are close in rating to suggest that you are probably losing mainly becuase of them
  • I find it hard to trust a computer to completely understand positional chess, and I would think it would be a lot less accurate in assessing between two slightly different positional moves than in other parts of the game.   if you want help with your positional moves IMHO you should get a coach.

I blunder whole pawns, not tenths of them. Tongue Out

I blunder eight pawns, my queen, my knights, my bishops, and my life

@didibrian You still have your rooks!

MikeCrockett

No. They saw which way the wind was blowing and switched sides...

Why have there been so many threads with this title?

DrSpudnik

Is a centipawn like a centipede with pawns?

bunicula

I don't know--but I guess now we have to call em centithreads!

I'm not saying that Huey is old...but he converts from Fahrenpawns.

Nice, Bells!

Average centipawn loss?

Probably a very good metric... if you're not a human and not playing human opponents...

sorry, I KNOW you want an answer, and stuff like "I don't blunder 1/100 of a pawn" SOUNDS like a troll answer.

but iTS really not.

as a HUMAN concentrate on not blundering,  and winning when there is a several pawns, a peice, or perhaps a kingside attack at stake (or NOT losing same difference).

I think almost NO one tracks average centipawn loss.  and I think that wouldn't be a useful metric to have.

Saying I have room for improvement is like saying an apartment with only a single table has room for furniture. But it's interesting, some of the small changes I'm aware of in some positions. (No matter our level, I suppose we all think the limits of our ability are pretty impressive lol.)

But that is an interesting thought about Karpov. Super GMs are probably aware of ridiculously small changes.

10 x centipawns = 1 pawn

1000 pawns = 1 kilopawn

1 kilopawn = 10000 centipawns

Someday there will be an engine that can grasp a nanopawn!

But will there ever be an engine that can understand the King's Indian, or when to resign?

bunicula

Sorry Dr, but that should be 100 centipawns for a pawn. In these hard times every centipawn counts.
