Best opening against d4?

When I come across D4 as black, I don't really know what to do against it, and I play some random moves that get me into a lost position. I'm normally used to e4 as black, so I don't see d4 in a lot of games, but I need an opening against d4 if I see it again. Any openings I could use?

It depends on your style. There are many good defences against d4.

Most of them stem from either d5 or Nf6.

d5:

  • Queen's Gambit Declined
  • Queen's Gambit Accepted
  • Tarrasch
  • Slav
  • Semi-Slav
  • Chigorin

Nf6:

  • Nimzo-Indian
  • Queen's Indian
  • Bogo-Indian
  • King's Indian
  • Benoni
  • Benko Gambit
  • Grünfeld
Toldsted

Try 1...f5 (the Dutch) as you can use it also against 1.c4 and 1.Nf3.

I really prefer Semi-Slave Defense against d4.

Shelbzdog123
attack the pawn

Slav defence is good and solid for Black.
DipperFromGravityFalls

I like playing the Dutch Defense.

Chill_Vibes_Booming

Dutch is good. No one knows theory so pointless to learn it. There are three main dutch variations: Classical, Leningrad, and stonewall. all are unique and suit different play styles. or if you want to switch up your play.

f5 the Dutch is also good.

Personally, I prefer Indian Defences like the King's Indian and Nimzo-Indian. They are the most flexible.

Nimzo-Indian as the more solid option. The disadvantage is that opponents often avoid it so you have to learn at least 1 other defence.

King's indian as the more aggressive option. Allows white a lot of space but has strong counterplay with a later f5 break or c5 Benoni transposition.

hmm... good openings, i will study some

I agree with some others that the Dutch is a decent choice. You have to study the Staunton Gambit 1.d4 f5 2. e4 and the tricky 1. d4 f5 2. Bg5 but once you figure those out you should be OK.

idk the dutch is quite hard to play as white gets an easy game

most people you play will play the london and i recommend this

DipperFromGravityFalls

I’ve been playing the Dutch recently and I find it to be almost as good as the Sicilian.

DipperFromGravityFalls

Nothing specific, but I do find Stonewall to be solid.

DipperFromGravityFalls

Heh, solid Stonewall

True but I'm losing my success with dutch. Which dutch do you learn?

if i had to recommend a person the dutch i would recommend the classical dutch, the stonewall and leningrad dutch are near refutable if white knows what hes doing, same with this but but its much easier to play, you usually want a setup like this

Sea_TurtIe

if you want a better dutch position play the nimzo

DipperFromGravityFalls

Any of y’all play Bird’s Opening Dutch Variation?

Sea_TurtIe

you can get it in the queens indian just be careful of the kasparov variation
