Nf3 is pretty solid...as well as the English opening.

Hi new_player21--it's worth mentioning that the Queen's Gambit has a better reputation that the King's Gambit; the first is usually declined while the second is usually accepted.  At that rating you can start to develop a style though, with e4 leading to more tactical/open games, d4 leading to lengthier games that tend to be semi-open, closed, or positional, and so forth.  1. c4 and 1. Nf3 are the other top-tier first moves as suggested by Hgoumenos, with possible transpositions into a lot of the 1. d4 systems.  You need to determine how you like to play with regard to seizing space, attacking/defending, and trading pieces.  If you've already had exposure to 1. e4 e5, then 2. Nf3 and 2. Nc3 are both popular alternatives.  If you're used to seeing 1. d4 d5, consider options like 2. Nf3 or 2. g3 instead of 2. c4.  Do you like the fact that gambits provide initiative, or hate the fact that you may end up a pawn down in the endgame?  That will steer you in the right direction.

Depends on your style.  At below-Master level, almost any opening is perfectly playable.  In my view Nf3 isn't really an opening -- it's a transposition tool that can go into many different openings.  While I'm here, I like the Catalan.

For black, I believe the King's Indian is one of the better openings for black. Here is a diagram of what it basically looks like:

Another great reference for almost all common openings is Chess Openings for Dummies. The book is suprisingly advanced for being in the "Dummies" series of book and offer complex openings, variations of openings, as well as providing a sample game using each opening. Here is a link to purchase the book: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/chess-openings-for-dummies-james-eade/1100295519?ean=9780470603642. No, this is not a paid endorsment for Barnes & Noble.
