Best place to learn Caro-Kann Advance variation with 3..c5?

Sort:

For a few weeks now, I have been on the brink of changing some of my black repetoire.

Against the caro advance variation, I would love to play 3..Bf5, but I have not been satisfied seeing the "short variation" or something like this as black, forgot what the name is, but thats besides the point. I don't like these positions I am getting.

So, i'm trying out new stuff for the heck of it, seeing what fits me. What is the best place to learn 3..c5? I think black is okay here, but I'd like to learn more about this variation.

Does anyone have a recommendation of a resource I can use?

For starters, it's not "Caro-Kann Advanced". Omit the last d, and one n.

Open an online database, and study the games by GM Igor Khenkin. There is also some material in Jovanka Houska's older Caro-Kan book.

*EDITS*, isn't caro-kann with two "n"s?, and thanks!

Indeed, Houska's book focuses on 3... c5 solely in the advance CK. Also Andrew Martin covers 3... c5 on his Caro Kann DVD.

Stormstout

It is actually Caro-Kann.

Why give up on the French?

Who said I was giving up on the french?

I am simply playing half and half with nearly all of my openings. (Caro and french, dutch and KID, 1.f4 and 1.nf3)

The French and Caro produce similar positions. The position I have had good luck with is one that transposes into a position similar to the Semi-Slav as in this game.

So far I have learned a few ideas from Khenkin's game, the lines seem fairly good for black, usually gets good comp for the missing pawn if such player doesnt recollect it.

Elubas

So now you're only a part time french player Frown

I looks good. I'll study it.

Khenkin is playing this variation "perfectly". The only issue is that the variation is rather risky- though not unsound.

If I may, why is it risky? Because black has to play very accurately otherwise he risks ending up down a pawn for zilch?

Yes, mostly that, but there are also lines in which white does not take on c5, but tries opening the game with an early c2-c4. I think Black should be OK in these sharp variations, but he has to be extremely careful.

Oh you mean this one. I am not sure whether black is able to trap the knight or not.

It looks very risky for black.

6.Qxd4 leads to some very interesting complications too.

Elubas

Waaaayy too sharp for me lol.

then you play with butter knives way too much. Don't think with queens off, that the play is too sharp really, but accuracy is required. I am not sure how the heck you collect the knight still!

InfiniteFlash

Yeah, i don't think black actually gets the knight in the corner, maybe he can get a pawn or two for it, similiar to maybe the kasparov vs the world game, but without queens i think. I hardly know anything though haha.

so maybe it is sharp, lol

bumping?

In online forums and other online discussion spaces bump is the word used to describe an action (e.g. a message post) so that a particular thread is returned to the top in the list of threads. Some users may even post a message with only the word "bump" to indicate they are posting only to bump the thread to the top of the list where more users will see it.
