This should help

Conquistador likes the Fortress Variation: 3. f3 4. d3 allows you to tuck the king away on f2.

There is the Bongcloud Zigzag Attack, 1. d4 2. Kd2 3. Ke3 but this isn't as good as other lines.

I am trying out a new line, 1. f4 2. Kf2. It is pretty good so far.

I don't feel that the fortress variation is as strong as others. Keeping your king on f2 is why you play the Hammerschlag. The Bongcloud attempts to put the king as far into enemy territory as possible, and the fortress doesn't do that as well as other variations

MyCowsCanFly

In my opinion, the beauty, power, and compelling nature of the Bongcloud derives from the King leading the attack. In this manner, the irresistable nature of the King as leader is unleashed.

Conquistador

I prefer to creat a fortress and then march my king to safety.  It discourages direct attack by black as white can counter attack with force.

I have also played:

The Bongcloud Gambit

1.e4 e5 2.Ke2 Nf6 3.Qe1 Nxe4 4.Kd1

Most Bongcloud Variations lose by force so you have to play the correct lines.

Conquistador

I challenge anyone to a Bongcloud any day.

This is true. Although safer, the fortress does not quite adhere to the main idea of the Bongcloud, which is why I am trying 1 f4. The King leads an assault directly up the king-side. If black tries to attack then his flank will be exposed to the rest of white's pieces.

This is a variation I play a lot. It's in the PDF I posted a link to earlier. I win almost every game with it
Little_Rebel

I'm not trying to mock you, I'm just curious, how do you win with that? Wouldn't black play Qh4#?

ivandh

No, because at this point the bong cloud is so thick Black can't see that far down the board.

MrPlatypus

Ah, so this is reefer madness. :)

Conquistador

1.e4 e5 2.Ke2 Nf6 is the main line

3.Qe1 is the Bongcloud Gambit

3.d3 leads to the Fortress variation

3.Kf3 is the Outflank Variation

3.Ke3 is the Kamakazee Variation

3.Kd3 is the Bongcloud Zigzag Attack

Five amazing ways to play ;)

Especially against black developing and castling king-side (including KID), I might play:

1. e3 2. Ke2 3. Kd3 4. kc4 5.kb5

Staying on the light colored diagonal keeps the king safe. It may incorporporate some modern ideas in that it provides black no targets for it's developed pieces.

In this position, the king is now ideally positioned to distrupt the pawn structure of the queen-side. Obviously, if needed, the king can side step, revealing an attack by the bishop.

In the absence of a reference, I've called this the "My Cows Can Fly" variation.

Hey conquistador can you give me more information on fortress variation?

1.  e4 e5 2.  Ke2 Nf6 3.  f3

Conquistador

The idea is to create a light square fortress for the king.

1.e4 e5 2.Ke2 Nf6 3.d3 d5 4.f3 Be6 5.Nc3 is the desired position as you have a complete defense on the light squares.  It is a must to keep the dark square bishop or some defense on the dark squares or you can be slowly squeezed to death.  Prawneatspawn defeated me in that manner.

DrizztD

Duuuuude how do you make a move sequence like that!?!

Another very nice thing about about the bongcloud is that it's very effective against these bastards which try to copy every move your making!

the best post - ever!!

dewriat

WTF?  The bong cloud can even bend the rules of chess!
