Modern Chess Openings is the book that Mr. Shaibel gave to little Beth Harmon. It has been updated many times and is still considered an authority on the subject.

Personally I prefer videos, but some people like books.

MCO was a wonderful book in it's time, but with the ready availability of databases most players seem to prefer opening books that have a lot of explanations of why moves are made.  Paul van der Sterren's Fundamental Chess Openings does just that and is generally considered the gold standard for one volume opening books.  In many ways it's an update and expansion of Reuben Fine's classic The Ideas Behind the Chess Openings.

Fundamental Chess Openings is good opening book to explain the ideas behind the movements.

MCO is still great if you just want to sit at a chess board and play through the lines. I find at a board and a book a lot easier than a chess database for some reason. 🤷‍♀️
