Botez Gambit

The Botez Gambit is an opening that sacrifices the queen for development and control over the center. It starts with the Wayward Queen Attack, 2...Nc6. White then plays Qxe5+, gambiting the queen.

If Black takes(called the Botez Gambit Accepted) then White can kick out the knight with 4. d4, forcing the knight to either c6, g6, or g4.

If Black plays 4...Ng4 or 4...Ng6, you should play 5. Nc3, defending against 5...d5, developing your knight, and gaining more central control. However, if Black plays 4...Nc6, you should play 5. Nf3. If they play 5...d4 after this, you should play 6. e5. Stockfish thinks that this is the second best move, but taking the pawn on d5 leads to 6...Qxd5, removing your control of the center and threatening to take the pawn on d4.

While 6. e5 leads to control of the center, White has to be careful after the move 6...Nb4, threatening a fork on c2 as the queen is no longer defending this square.

Here, White can play 7. Bb5+, and after 7...c6, White can play either 8. Ba4 or 8. Bd3. If White plays 8. Ba4, Black can continue to put pressure on the c2 square with 8...Bf5. After this, White can play 9. O-O, removing the fork, and after 9...Nxc2 10. Bxc2 Bxc2, Black may have won a pawn, but the pawn they got is not exactly a center pawn.

If White plays 8. Bd3, after 8...Nxd3+ 9. cxd3, Black can play 9...Qa5+, which can be blocked by 10. Nbd2.

While White is down a queen, Black can't really start an attack on the white king, and White has a lot of central control, while 4...Ng4 and 4...Ng6 don't even try to contest White's control of the center. So what should Black play to respond to the Botez Gambit?

Inspirational gambit line

Maybe I should try this in some of my bullet games…

I don't see how you have anywhere near compensation for the queen.

The space you get is legendary

it is like the Halloween Gambit (

)

but with a queen, so higher stakes

this might be an example game, where if Black is not careful (does quite literally nothing for like 15 moves lol) then White gets a pretty nice position:

It's called the Patzer Opening on the 365 database, but there are no games with 3...Qxe5. You have space, but unless you can get a strong attack, it is a lost endgame. Compare to like the Muzio Gambit where you get an obvious attack for a piece.

Ilampozhil25

the "overwhelming center control" you get is the exact same as the french after d5 e5

so... that the opening where a) you have the same space advantage as here b) there the bishop is locked and c) you arent down a queen is sound means that you have no compensation for the queen

space isnt even worth a knight, so saying its worth a queen is dumb

gambiteers nowadays....

Guys

to both of you

it’s quite literally a joke

’Botez Gambit’ was a name that Alexandra Botez gave to some of her blunders, and it became an unofficial term. This was all a joke guys…

Lol the fact that you believed that we thought it was good 🤣

Yes it was a joke

Sometimes worth a knight

but it’s shocking how you think a lot of gambit players are being serious with these troll openings

CianCoconut

bro sacced a whole queen for four squares💀

Might be just me, but I don't see the point in assisting entertainment streamers in their capitalist endeavor by using a term whose only purpose is to spread a brand name further.

it's more a meme name

it was also probably used by them to promote themselves, but at this point it's used commonly enough that it is also just a general chess meme term

The botez gambit it just like a meme opening. it;s just losing your queen on purpose, and it doesn't have to be with the knight taking it. Its just like a speedrun meme to give opponet insane odds then beat them

BlueHen86

I'd be happy to play against it.
