Caro-Kann 4...Nf6

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the main plans/maneuvers/setup for black in the 4...Nf6 variation in the main line with the caro kann. White captures the knight and I was hoping to get some examples on how to play on with gxf6 and exf6.

Thanks!

I have played the exf6 line for years and allot depends on what system white will play. If white knows what they are doing I find black can get a difficult position if white plays the set up with c3, Bd3 followed up with Qc2 however in the majority of games I have played in this line most white players are not familiar with what to do and black gets a nice game developing normally and pushing  your f pawn up the board to create some weaknesses.

It is a very solid system but there are better alternatives for black.

These are two variations that Tartakower liked to play. I quite like the gxf6 version. Your opponent often doesn't expect you to capture with the g-pawn. And if he castles kingside, you have your rook controlling the g-line and a powerful h-pawn you can use to attack his defense structure.

capturing with the g-pawn seems more natural

5...ef6 is safe and solid, but gives you fewer chances to win (or lose)

5...gf6 gives you more winning - and therefore more losing chances as well. If you get down to an endgame the isolated KRP and doubled f-pawns suck ass, big time.
