NO....one of the beauties of Caro-Kann is that you attack the center immediately why would you play this if ur giving white an additional initiative on top of the one he started with!!!

Hi Matt,

I play the Caro-Kann all the time, and I think that the knight is better placed on d7. This variation is playable though. I saw some games where black puts the knight on c7 and then plays d6 and e5 later on. In the link below you'll see a game by its inventor, but well, it's even less exciting than a normal Caro-Kann .

2. ... d5 is not that bad!!

yea, exactly what i tought.

Altho, i was really not sure if it was good or not.
i've seen a good defense of queen side and of e4 trought that.

But like stealpawn said, it gives even more iniative.

Thanks for replies. Much apprecieted.

I don't like it. You lose a tempo for seemingly no reason, and without the knight on d7 white gets the comfy e5 square for his knight. Also will the knight even be useful on that square or will you have to reposition it again losing yet another tempo?

No. The Nd7 move is essential, as it hits both c5,e5 and d4!
