what are the pros and cons of teh scandinavian opening

mattattack99

Well, black strikes at white's pawn without e6 (French) or c6 (Caro-Kann) so black avoids a cramped position. A downside is that black wastes a tempo on moving his queen. This opening has been used by IM Josh Waitzkin and GM Vishy Anand.

Don't forget GM Julio Becerra :)

Pros:

1.The Scandinavian defense has easy concepts and theory to learn.

2.At class C level or below it can be a great weapon.

Cons:

1.It is very easy to get a good position as white.  Many variations are playable for white.

2.Black has trouble generating enough activity due to the lost tempos.

3.You need to have a good knowledge of the endgame positions to win effectively.

4.You reach a point as a chess player where you plateau.  At this point, switch to a more mainstream opening.

5.There are a few problem lines.  For example:

1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qa5 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nf3 c6 6.Bc4 Bf5 7.Bd2 e6 8.Nd5 Qd8 9.Nxf6+ gxf6 with a long term structural problem or 9...Qxf6 and black has to expend more tempos moving his queen.

Black has not fared well after 9...Qxf6 10.Qe2! which Shirov has demonstrated.

True, this is a very annoying line for black in the Scandinavian defense...  How would you evaluate the positions below for black?

I have enjoyed playing the Scandinavian a lot lately, but there are a couple lines in both the Qa5 variation (1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qa5 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nf3 c6 6.Bc4 Bf5 7.Bd2 e6 8.Nd5 Qd8 9.Nxf6+ Qxf6) and the Nf6 variation (1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Nf6 3. Bb5+ Bd7 4. Bxd7+ Qxd7 5. c4 ) that give me headaches, so I'm thinking about switching to another opening already.  Any solutions for black?

Confederate4life

um i would go bishop to pawn diagonal to queen

I'm not sure I understand your comment cooldude4. Using algebraic notation would help. Does anyone else have any thoughts on the post above (#7)? Thanks.

Have something planned against 2. Nf3

It's very tricky.

Ricky_James_Fischer

Does anyone ever mention the line 2...Nf6 instead of 2...Qxd5?
