What do yo play against 1. e4 e5. ?
The First Move

One of the first moves I'm least gonna do is f3 or f4. But I might do this on fast chess games. Talk about mashing your teeth together!

F3 and f4 are bad openings. They expose the king's diagonal which is key to doing the two-move checkmate.

1. f3 is much worse than 1. f4, which might actually be semi-playable in a very offbeat sort of way. 1. f3 deprives the king's knight of its best square. Actually it has been called the worst possible move by some players.

1. b3 is a quite enjoyable game for me. Often it is supposed to be played as a closed and slow game, but it can get very intense if certain moves are played. It allows for a near instant fianchetto and interesting queenside play. It also makes putting the Queen's knight on c3 irresistable, and e3 opens the queen and light-square bishop without commiting too much to the center. This is important in the beginnig of 1. b3 as it is a hypermodern game.
I am not however familiar with 1. e3 except that it is annoying to play against as there is little ground to directly attack.

The most common openings in chess are e4, d4, Nf3, c4. Although there are a lot of other openings, these are the most common. I generally like e4. It gives me access to two pieces, the queen and light-squared bishop, and is very common. Next I'm going to talk about other openings besides the ones listed above. A4 isn't a bad move. It gives you access to the rook. But it's the other pieces (queen, bishops, and knights) you're trying to get out of the back rank. Also, it's clumsy to get your rook out through that tight space and is a target like the queen during the opening. A3 basically doesn't do anything. B3 is a way to fianchetto your dark square bishop. But if you try to develop your light square bishop, black may try to trap your light square bishop as the b pawn is blocking it. B4 gives your light-squared bishop more space to retreat but this leads to the b pawn hanging. And it's not like you can defend this pawn, as it will block your bishop. C3. This opens up your queen, but it will block your knight. C4 is better than c3 because it won't block your knight. So I prefer c4. Next is d3. What does this do? It activates the bishop.
