Creative Chess Openings?

I don't play chess at a great level but I would still like to learn some creative options for me to open with without hampering my midgame too much.

Thanks :)

if you don't play chess at a great level, it is hard to play dubious openings without hampering your mid-game. there are usually far too many scenarios that playing a dubious game opens up - far too many to document.

if you want a solid opening that encourages creative attacking i would suggest kings gambit

It really depends what your style is...

I would actually recommend the queen's pawn openings as the king's pawn openings have LOADS of theory behind them where you could go wrong very easily, they're very tactical. The Colle System is not the most popular but there are some very vicious attacks for white if you are looking for that sort of thing.

As black, against 1. e4 I play the Sicilian and I believe it is an aggressive, uncomprimising defence for black with lots of counterplay. This is probably the thing you're looking for as a 'creative' opening as there are many lines to learn that could suit your style of play. Against 1. d4 there are many replies that give black a tactical, aggressive game. I would recommend the Modern Benoni, which gives black a good game indeed, or if you don't feel comfortable with that the King's Indian is a popular defence.

Creative? Try the Durkin (or Sodium) attack. It's basically whatever opening you're opponent chooses where he gets the initial tempo.Wink

try the anderssen opening. it may be an uncommon opening but you can get a decent position from it.

For someone seeking help with choosing openings, I usually bring up Openings for Amateurs by Pete Tamburro (2014).

I believe that it is possible to see a fair portion of the beginning of Tamburro's book by going to the Mongoose Press site.

Perhaps Druiddroid would also want to look at Discovering Chess Openings by GM John Emms (2006).

"Each player should choose an opening that attracts him. Some players are looking for a gambit as White, others for Black gambits. Many players that are starting out (or have bad memories) want to avoid mainstream systems, others want dynamic openings, and others want calm positional pathways. It’s all about personal taste and personal need.
For example, if you feel you’re poor at tactics you can choose a quiet positional opening (trying to hide from your weakness and just play chess), or seek more dynamic openings that engender lots of tactics and sacrifices (this might lead to more losses but, over time, will improve your tactical skills and make you stronger)." - IM Jeremy Silman (January 28, 2016)

If you could explain what you mean by your midgame it would give me insight in order to help you find creative options.   I have reviewed your games.
