Daniel_2002 at our level do we play THAT accurately that the 0.4% difference will really matter? :)

Daniel_2002

The point is D4 is the best first move, whether we can exploit it or not!

Rybka evaluations:

e4:+0.20

d4:+0.54

David210

rybka is overestimating the difference, its not that much. different engines will give different evaluations anyway. its not written in stone.

Daniel_2002

Every little bit counts!

Daniel_2002

Youre a 1700 thats pretty good

Also compare the percentage Black wins!

4 percent is a lot!

1) engines cannot calculate effectivelly the openings as an engine euristically excludes potentially good moves., and an openings goes woll over move 20 , so cannot really be trusted. Dont even try trusting an engine for opening as they can only point huge mistakes, not really the best choice up to the endgame. Infact any modern engine use internal opeining DB for the first moves and start calculating only when the match goes "out of book". You can conside this  the proof that engines are not mature enough to chose the "best" opening ( even if they exist).

2) What DB shows are only the vistory ration against another human, so none of the match was perfect. Any human ( even GM's) do some mistakes. Not considering that DB include old matches with old fashioned variantions that theory have ripped and are no longer in use. Not counting that any DB have not the full list of all matches. Different DB's have different percentages. This means that those percentage are just nonsense.

3) The best opeining ( for you ) is the one you know better than your opponent and suits your plaiing style.

4) Any time i see threads like this, they arealways made by very low skilled people ( patzers). Do they really think they are smarter than the whole list of GM's and super GM's that still play 1.e4 ( or d4, or Nf3 or whathever) ? Get serious and shrink your ego to a proper size!!!!!!!

5) I prefer 1.d4 too, but its just due to my plaiing style, I would never dare to say that  Aronina, Kramnik or any other top player are idiots  and play the grong opening How can a sane person even consider arguments like this?

+0.54?!?! Half a pawn for playing d4? This is not overestimating, that is... wierd.

Wait a sec, on my computer Rybka gives +0.1 for d4 and +0.05 for e4.

BTW, I prefer Houdini who gives :

+0.13 for e4

+0.14 for d4...

Is the difference huge?

Another thing.

Read these articles... there is very advanced statistical analysis.

For the people who don't want to read :

-the people who play e4 are weaker than their opponent (in average)

-the opposite is true for d4

-at equal level, e4 is 0.2% better than d4.
