I like d4 because white seems to get more lasting initiative and pressure. with d4 if black plays d5 white can play c4 and try to play for a good advantage. It's harder to do this with e4 because if black plays e5, challenging the center with f4 is risky. Of course both are probably equally good moves and it mostly depends on whether you are a positional or tactical player.
d4 or e4

yeah d4 is a good move not risky when you play it as white...e4 is more complicated than d4...for beginners d4 is a good move in the opening especially by white

Actually, I have seen many people recommend e4 for beginners. Why? Because e4 games tend to be a bit more tactical and agressive than d4 openings.

I personally don't like having a postional advantage and making a fairly simple tactical mistake to give my opponent the advantage. But I understand that beginners should start with more tactical games, it takes a while (for me at least) for a player to really understand the strategy of chess.

Last time I checked, no one held a gun to your head and made you read and reply to the thread.

yes same, i prefer the position advantage in d4, luv the lil traps too, e4 is too analysed. everyone know what to do in e4. though i did luv e4 when i was a begginer

I actually find that agressive and attacking openings simply work for me with d4. This may seem really out of the ordinary, but I like to play the Latvian Attack and the Catalan. I like gambiting pawns and do not hesitate to gambit the c4 pawn. Most people my level usually take the pawn and hold onto it for dear life. Only at the Expert level do players give back the pawn and not be so materialistic. In my fave Latvian, I love it when they take my g2 pawn and h2 pawns. Lets me rake their Kingside with my better development and open files. They usually don't have a chance if that happens. If they are smart and don't take things, my opponents usually reach a complicated position. Just the kind of thing I like.

When my mom taught me the moves, she said that e4 was the best opening move because it opens up your bishop and your queen. She said that some people play d4 but that it wasn't as good because the queen wasn't going to come out straight ahead.
Now, she didn't use the term "e4" or "d4" but something like "this pawn" and "this other pawn" but it's not bad advice.
fischer said e4 best by test. i guess cause it also challenges the black kingside. i suck though so listen to cobblepot.
my favorite opening is d4 along with c4...whats yours?lets see if players like d4 or e4 more...is it e4 or d4?
