It is a very practical system, a really good choice.
Some specialists : Kirill Stupak, Emmanuel Berg, Vaganian and of course Tigran Petrosian!
It is called the Winawer Petrosian but the former world champ played it differently, with Bb7 instead of Ba6 (which everyone almost play nowadays, though Bb7 is playable).
I'm not a French Defence player, I play Caro-Kann but have the Grandmaster Repertoire book by Negi that covers the French/Caro-Kann/Philidor for White.
He wasn't very fond of the alternatives to 4...c5, but my book is at least 6 years old. I don't know if anything has changed more recently.
I like looking at repertoire books from the opposite perspective for a better understanding of positions/variations.
If anyone has recommended it in a book or video series? Or even any masters use it with some regularity? It just looks kind of interesting to me I'd be curious to read some about it. Any knowledge would be appreciated!
1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e5 Qd7
It reminds me of the line with 4...c5 5.a3 Bxc3 6.bxc3 Qc7 in that Qg4 is met by f5 and also you can get the ...b6, ...Ba6 idea in without allowing the disruptive Bb5+ as in 4...b6 lines (or having to play lines with Bf8). It just appeals to my intuition and feels like something I might have tried on my own if I had no access to chess theory, so I want to learn a little about it!
