I just played this opening in a FICS rapid game.

Searching ChessBase MegaBase2009 (over 4 million games) this opening postion only occurs about 550 times.

It's like the Four Knights' Game, except on the queenside :-)

Its the veresov opening. I play the opening all the time. anyway its 1.D4 D5 2. Nc3 Nf6. 3. Bg5 is the usual line called Richter Rauzer attack. i usually play the Nf3 move instead as white. However there is no official name for the opening. Its a really complicated opening. Neither side really gets a real advantage out of the opening. The real advantage comes  from who has the most patience to not ofrce things.

Its called Queens Pawn Game, a nice catchall phrase for games that start with d4 d5 nf3 nf6 in no particular order.  1.d4 d5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. Bg5 is the Veresov (alt order 1. d4 Nf6 2. Nc3 d5), sometimes called the Richter-Veresov Attack, depending on your opening manual.  The Richter Rauzer is a subvariation in the Sicilian Defense.

You don't find your QP 4 knights often because it doesn't make much sense.
