Dutch w b6….

I’ve played a lot of classical and stonewall Dutch but I’ve been looking at something a little different recently….. obviously depending on what white plays, I’ve been been playing 1….e6, 2….f5 and then Nf6 and or b6. Putting the queens bishop on b7 has provided some very interesting games/ideas. Has anyone else played the Dutch like this?

Rule of thumb for e6-Dutch Players (i.e. Non-Leningrad)

1) Stonewall and Classical are LAST RESORT, not primary goals.

2) To stabilize control of the light squares, e6, f5, and Nf6 must be played first.

3) ONLY AFTER 1...e6 (or 1...f5), 2...f5, and 3...Nf6 should Black assess the approach.

3a) If White specifically has played d4, c4, Nc3, and Nf3 his first 4 moves IN ANY ORDER, then play 4...Bb4 with an improved Nimzo-Indian (...b6 and ...Bb7 will often result soon after)

3b) If White has played g3 and beat Black to the punch of the long diagonal, play the Stonewall or Classical based on personal preference (4...d5 or 4...Be7/5...d6).  For me personally, that would be the Stonewall.  But if you are more of a Classical guy, have at it - nothing wrong with it!

3c) In ALL OTHER CASES, meaning London Setup, early e3 lines like a Colle Setup, Bg5 lines, etc, where White has not taken over the long diagonal, play 4...b6!  The Bishop will thank you for it with Black pawns on d7, e6, and f5.  This is why an early g3 against the Dutch is the main line.

Love this response. It’s very much along those lines that I’ve been thinking/playing. Thanks for the detailed post!
