lol looking very much like the queen's gambit
ENGLISH OPENING???

That's not the English. :)
You've transposed into a Queen's Gambit Declined.
3.e4!? is the sharpest and stays in English territory. It's called the Mikenas Attack. White is threatening e4-e5, which would force the knight to undevelop.

I don't think three e3 is right for the English, although the supposed beauty of the English is the ability to quickly transpose to other openings as needs be.

Just to give you a flavour of the play that can follow 3.e4!?
He resigns due to 18...bxc6 19.Rd8+ Kf7 20.Nd6#.

Get a book on the English, there are some and all I think are rather similar. There are lines that are positional with few tactics and a great deal of strategy and lines that are full of tactics. Choose what you like and don't believe anyone who tells you that the English is for old guys.

Mebeme - White's play is very easy: 3.dxc6 Nxc6 and now he develops his kingside pieces, castles, and the long-term advantage of the extra central pawn should decide the game in his favor. It's Black who needs to 'find a line' proviing his extra tempo is worth a full pawn. It's the gambiteer who must prove he has adequate compensation.

We played the opening out a bit at 20+5, and this is what we produced. The game ended by disconnection instead of a decisive result... darn live chess. ;)
I think the simplifications 6...Bxc3 and 7...Qxd1 were to White's advantage.

I think most players would rather play White, two pawns up and the bishop pair. Heck, White can even play 17. Bxd4 followed by Be3 and oppose rooks if he wishes.

that's the thing, there are no good variations of the english opening because it is not a very good opening. 1.d4 or 1.e4 is much better
I like to play the english opening, and do not know the theory and am unsure of which opening to play. Does anyone know any good variations or traps in the English Opening???
This is a common variation of mine
