Everyone's doing Queen's Pawn

I am currently in the low 700s, and it seems that every game I play as black, my opponent opens with d4. Is there a reason this opening is used so much, at least for that rating? I've been led to believe that e4 with the King's Pawn was the most popular/fundamental opening move.

1. e4 is a stronger opening for those who like to attack and play actively.  1. d4 is a stronger opening for those who like to close up the middle and wait for the other player to make a mistake.

At your level, blunders still abound, so it's not too surprising to see 1. d4 played a lot.  I'd recommend 1. ..e6 or 1. ..Nf6 in reply, rather than the symmetrical 1. ..d5.

I wonder if the tv series has anything to do with it.

Doesn’t everyone play e4 though?

imagine playing d4 -_-

A popular chess streamer is promoting the accelerated London as the best beginner's opening. So, expect to play against a lot of accelerated London systems.

Most people start out playing e4 - probably a good idea as it's generally more tactical.

1. d4 generally becomes more played as you go up the ratings. But at the elite level 1. e4 and 1. d4 are about equally played.

Of course, throughout history it was all 1. e4, then 1. d4 seemed to reached a peak some time in the latter parts of the last century when it was thought it might become the clear favourite among GMs (Fischer becoming one of the very few elites who would only play e4). However remarkably these two moves that lead to very different games are considered pretty much equal at the gm level today.

If you ask me I think 1. d4 is slightly better, it's just harder to prove an advantage enough to win at GM level which is why GMs resorted to 1. e4 - though of course the Berlin and Petrof are destroying that as well.

I was saying they all play e4 in the queens gambit...
