Favorite, Solid Defense for Black

I prefer the German defence. So solid on the king-side. And very open resources on the queen-side. Perhaps the c3 Knight shift to the center is the key move for a comfortable game. The only weakness is the light square bishop which remains inactive for about 10 moves. But definitly worth a try.

What is the German defence?

I've also never heard of the German Defense, but I found this http://www.chess.com/opening/eco/A00_Polish_Opening_German_Defense

I would start saying that I am sure you can find sharp play against any defense at one moment or another. But looking for Solid play :
For 1.e4 I would put my money on the Caro-Kann
For 1.d4 I would put my money on the ... I don't know, Closing the position does not seem like the safest way to play for me but maybe something like the Slav/Semi Slav
In any case there is sharp play against the Caro-Kann (like the Panov attack) and certainly there are shap attacks against the Slav...
The KID was one of the the defenses used by Fisher against d4. If he didn't like sharp play I don't know who did. A great defense, but far from a harmless one.
Good luck in your search.

I only play 1...e6 against both 1.e4 and 1.d4. I'm surprised that in live(online) chess a lot of players don't seem to know the very basic ideas in French defence and are only prepared against Sicilian or King Pawn game. Of course, now and then White surprises me, and then my knowledge and understanding on some anti-french lines (e.g. 2.Qe2!?) improves.
There's a lot of interesting, lively transposition revolving around non1.e4; I guess that's why I don't play 1.e4 since many years ago (I hate to play against Sicilian and other over-analysed lines), and apparently in World Championship matches they like 1.d4 games too =)

The Pirc, if played correctly, is pretty solid, and the KID, though I've found the QID to be pretty powerful in its own right, and I think I'm liking it even more these days. The Slav is considered to be very solid to my understanding, though I can't say I know it that well. Two Knights tends to be pretty solid too, but it can depend on how aggressive your opponent plays as well
When you are not in the mood to play a sharp defense, what defense do you chose against 1.e4? 1.d4?
Sometimes I am in the mood to not be the aggressor, set up a defense for Black with the fewest possible weaknesses, and simply wait for my opponent to make the first mistake, then pounce.
