Fell victom in the Sicilian Dragon

Sort:
Kupov

I played a game in live chess today where an opponent seemingly blundered away a pawn (and he actually did) however he managed to, again seemingly trap my bishop and win the game.

I had never seen this line of the Sicilian Dragon before, but this game was a valuable learning experience for me.

Note that most of the moves presented here are actually my post mortem analysis done after looking through The Sicilian dragon and trying to see where I went wrong. I think I found a winning move, but if you see any holes in my analysis please point them out.

never seen?

someone needs to be educated in the sicilian

Now black has a hanging bishop which can't move because that hangs a rook (after recapturing the queen) I don't see a valid continuation for black, for example.

I had better illusrate this, it's unclear.

I've seen the sicilian dragon, but I've never seen the variation where black recaptures on C6 with the b pawn... I never expected it since it seems to lose a pawn.

mistake

he sacrafice pawn for better game if he was play 12..Ra8 or Qa5

In your analysis I prefer 16.Bxc5 because that gives White three passed pawns and it keeps the pressure on d7. While Black is trying to save the bishop, White should be able to push the pawns easily.

Earlier, after 13.e5 you assume 13...dxe5, but try 13...Ne8 14.exd6 Bxc3. Now 15.Qxc3 (or bxc3), 15...exd6 (or Nxd6). White's bishop at a7 is still trapped.

I believe Bxc6 is better for black since the c file is still opened (where black just moved his rook) and whites bishop is still "hanging". As general advice in the sicilian dragon: white does not go pawn hunting, does not seek play on the queenside or open files for blacks rooks against whites king.

I have understood that bxc6 is common reply in positions where a7-pawn is protected. Rook on a open b-file with dragon bishop makes nice pressure on b2. bxc6 also prevets white from removing black's defending f6-knight with Nd5 maneuver.

According to rybka (at depth 17) Bxc6 is clearly the best reply and bxc6 is roughly as good as Rxc6, or even slightly better. Even if black would lose this pawn, having another open file to attack white king can't be too bad.

Bxc6 is definitely the correct move, game explorer here at chess.com thinks so too.

This may give black a chance to continue..

ya, yunno i think the extra exchange gives signifinacant winning chance, even if black gets counterplay with the two bishops and rook on the 7th

Black is still down a solid two points there I would think.
