Free Chess Opening Software

I don't play much chess, but I've been working on a project in my spare time to visualize and train opening lines. I've learned a lot making it, but I'm not sure how helpful it might be for more involved chess players. Let me know if anything seems interesting or has the potential to be! I'm very open to feedback.

You can find it here: chessrep.com

*Exclusively available in desktop browsers (Tested working in Chrome and Firefox. Broken at the moment in Safari)

I've included a couple of openings from MCO-14 to play around with! Just click the "Load" button to see a list.

Here's what you can do:

- Add new lines by moving the pieces on the board

- Instantly jump to any board state by clicking on the square in the tree

- Add comments for each move

- Quiz yourself on custom trees or the small selection of MCO-14 openings provided

- Navigate the tree with the arrow keys (Shift+Arrow Keys or Click+Drag to pan)

- Hold down "Z" for a high-level overview of the tree

- Save your custom trees locally

I've tried to make it as intuitive as possible, but parts of it may be confusing. Feel free to send feedback with the Smiling/Frowning faces on the site itself or leave a comment if you have any problems.

Thanks!

Very interesting! I think the board would be easier to use if the notation was placed on the outside of the board, and also if there was some kind of drag-and-drop capability for the pieces. If developed further, I think this could be a very useful tool.

Oh, also it needs some move validation, i. e., if you move a piece illegally, the program doesn't notice (it is possible to play 1. e2-f4). BTW I am using Safari on macOS and it seems to work.
