I agree, d3 is a beautiful square for that bishop.
French advance Bd7!

strange...i could never understand why people would want to put that bishop anywhere but d3 in the french anyway...h7 is just such an obvious target
One reason: it weakens d4. Now like I said in my game the d pawn can be sacrificed but theoretically black is doing very well. And after 6 Bd3 Qb6 7 Bc2, ...cxd4 cxd4 Nb4 just gives black easy play, winning the two bishops or else white has to waste another tempo.

Right, perhaps white is looking for a way to punish the Bd7 move, because playing Bd3 allows black to play ...Qb6 transposing into "regular" lines, from white's point of view.

Well even positionally Bb5 is just bad. But after the main line Be2 black can make good use of his flexibility with either ...f6, starting a sharp pawn chain battle immediately, or play ...Nge7-g6 perhaps with pressure on e5 when ...f6 is played. Or he could put it on f5 and do a normal attack on d4, but the ...Bd7 move should still be helpful to black's game.

Yeah, it transposes. I don't know if refuted is the right word, but I think black can get the advantage (well, that probably would mean refuted actually).

Right - I like to define "refuted" as what the outcome of a large GM-only thematic tournament would be for the opening.
I am a realtive newcomer to opening theory, but this is awesome.
What's blacks best continuation? Maybe c4?

so what if white took the Knight at e-5 and then the pawn at f7? launching a fried liver attack? other than that I like the variation.

Bd7 is French Defense: Advance Variation, Euwe Variation. Bb5 is not a move I would even consider in this position. In fact, based on the info on the page for the opening, Bb5 was never played in any of the games with this opening in the Chess.com database. I would think Be2 would be the move of choice here, just from looking at the position, and it seems it is the most popular choice for White when Bd7 is played.
So I played some blitz games on CC the other day and had some great success with this line of the french advance variation. It seemed like a lot of my opponents were falling for it. No more 5.Qb6 for me.
