what do you think for this variation, one of the most complicated of french defence said by kasparov in the book my great predecessors.
FRENCH DEFENCE

That is the Chatard-Alekhine attack, I play the white side of it and I think it gives both sides reasonable chances. The winawer is much more complicated in my opinion though.

When the white H4 pawn comes out the black bishop should take the white bishop and the queen takes pawn. With white knight to h4 and queen retreating. One of my favorites.

When I played this line, I played 5.... Ng8 with good results. Held well against GM Bisguier many, many years ago though he polished me off in good order in the endgame having the advantage of the distant passed pawn.
The French is a good defense but you must be patient. I play it infrequently now because 1) I play no opening exclusively 2) I got tired of the advance variation. At the club level White almost always plays 3. e5
The French Defence is a very solid and useful opening. Good defensive players will love this one, because Black gets a lot of counter-attacks and defensive possibilities. Although the queen's bishop is locked up for the early parts of the game, Black can usually gain much more of a foot-hold in the centre and more space than with a Caro-Kann.
This defence currently is one of my favorites.
I have been playing both sides of the French for over twenty years and have been on the Black side of the Alekhine-Chatard Attack only twice. Once winning when I was really lost, and the other winning a tough tactical fight. I love the French.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I started a French Defense tournament for anyone rated between 1600 and 2100. If you are interested in learning more about this opening and want to play some great chess then please join us.
