A gambit is when you sacrifice a pawn and allow your opponent to take it in exchange for a lead in development.

Examples such as

Kings Gambit

Queens Gambit

Smith-Morra Gambit

mq1982

There are numerous gambits and they are designed to give the player (who plays the gambit) an initiative (e.g. attacking chances or open lines).

I've not researched this, but I wouls suspect the most popular for White are the King's and Queen's Gambit (which isn't even a Gambit because the extra pawn can't be held by black), and for black the Smith-Morra and Evans Gambit both offer lots of tricks and traps.

My favourite is the Budapest Gambit - see my blog or (my new blog)www.budapestgambit.blogspot.com for more info.

Hope this answers your question,

Mike

Black:

There are some excellent counter gambits for black:

What is the object of playing a gambit opening? To acquire a reputation of being a dashing player at the cost of losing the game.

no. to "temporarily" give up material (usually a pawn) in order to better one's position/pressure/center advantage etc. (i used quotes because sometimes the pawn is completely given up).

One of my favorite gambits is the traxler counter attack, black gives up a ton of material for an attack. Here's an example

maybe you should try a normal opening. i am guessing that since you dont know the use of a gambit then a gambit is to advanced for you to take advantage of. post one of your games  so i can see what you are doing in the opening and i will give you some advice.
