Giuoco Pianissimo

I am starting to experiment with the Giuoco Pianissimo, but I was wondering about some things.  I find that it has many similarities to the Ruy Lopez in terms of themes and that it can be played against both the 2 knights and the Giuoco Piano.  What is the main difference between this Giuoco Pianissimo and the Ruy Lopez?

Well, I play the Giuoco Piano... The Pianissimo is a bit too slow for me.

It's less aggresive then the Spanish game.. There's also a lot less theory. Generally speaking, I think it's believed that black can equalize easier with GP.

It's weird though.. One square making all the difference.

The difference between Giauco Piannissimo and the Ruy Lopez : Bc4 and Bb5.

Giuoco Piannissimo is very slow.... But when Black enters the Giuoco Piano I try to find a more sharp continuing, but the Evans Gambit is maybe too sharp....

The main difference is that Giuoco Pianissimo is pretty boring. The most you can get here is try to pin opponent's knight on f3/f6 or exchange your bishop on e3/e6 to open "f" line. Ruy Lopez is very rich, play can be tactical or positional, never boring, maybe Exchange variation a bit, but even there you can play sharp lines too. You can try Giuoco Pianissimo, but you will not progress much tactically or positionally playing it. Giuoco Piano is different, you can play sharp lines or modern positional c3, d3 line and here it gets close to Ruy Lopez.

You realize I am talking about the modern c3 and d3 line?

Chess writer Gary Lane calls it Closed Giuoco Piano. It could be dangerous in skillful hands, I once lost to essentually higher rated player in it after getting under attack on kingside, which was similar to such attacks in Ruy Lopez - Nbd2, Nf1, Ng3, Nf5, etc.

In OTB I prefer to use that as White.  Maybe because of my lower rating people don't excpect it or see it very often.  I win more often with is than not.  I can get into trouble with those higher rated that play it though.  It's kinda a double edge sword.

OTB = Over the board.  Live chess.

Giuoco Pianissimo is a continuation of the Giuoco Piano with the selection of 4. d3 and is slow and cautious.

4. b4 (Evans Gambit) and 4. d4 (Italian Gambit) both take a quicker, sharper pace.

4. c3 is the main line.
