There are lots of fine defenses to d4. The main consideration is whether you'd prefer to respond symmetrically (with d5 and later c6 or e6 [or both]), or whether you'd rather respond asymmetrically with Nf6 (one of the Indian defenses). Of course, there are often options for transpositions as well.

If more people respond in the manner of posts 2 through 4, you'll see a large number of answers -- probably more than you'd see against e4. This just shows that there are a variety of good ways to handle the queen's pawn opening (generally white will play c4 as well).

I like to start off with Nf6, i mostly do the benko, or the KID.

Lol there is no correct answer.......there are plenty of viable options to play against Pd4 and everyone has differeent opinion and styles. You need to find one you like!

Statistically the Nimzoindian does well and its an interesting opening to play. White can bottle it with Nf3 but then you could try the Benoni which avoids Whites sharpest f4 variations....

I still think that 1d4 is probably best met by 1 ....d5 against a good or equal strength player  -perhaps using the former for must wins, perceived weaker opponents or general fun :-)

I would suggest learning one Indian defence and one 1.....d5 defence

I go for the Albin Countergambit because it's a lot of fun...it's not that popular though.
