I regularly play the French Defense 1: e4,e6.
Good Response to e4

the sicilian...the sicilian ....sicilian, u will never get bored by exploring the lines of the dragon, if u get bored (which i doubt) try the accelerated dragon , then the hyper accelerated dragon, if all the fires wouldnd satisfy u , move for a while to scheveningen .....come on its endless
I have really gotten to like the pirc. It is the 4th most poular response to 1.e4, so people arent always expecting it. you just play 1 e4 d6, and then continue similar to the king's indian. I am rated right around 1400, I beat 1500 and up players with it all the time. it takes time to learn all the weird nuances white can pull, and the best responses to the h- pawn attack/ forced bishop exchange, and of course the early e5 before you get a chance to, but once you have figured out good ways past those you will find you have some AWESOME attacks against the enemy king no matter which side of the board your opponent castles on ( and if he neglects to castle he is dead quick). Give it a shot, and give it a while. the fianchettoed position CAN be broken down quite easily if you dont have your defenses/ couterattacks down pretty well, but dont give up. Once you learn to play a sound pirc it makes a great surprise weapon, as well as being a part of a solid openings repoitoirre ( yes, I know I spelled that wrong. Will the next poster please use the correct spelling of that word so I know to spell it right.)

i support e5... don't know what's wrong with it. it doesn't lead to bad positions for black, but many times people play it like it's drawish... nonesense! onionsense i say!

Try 1...Nf6 its not as popular as the pirc and modern but if played correctly it can be very effective
you'll have fun with it.

1.e4 e5 is not bad for black.
The sicilian is not 'blockaded'. It's almost always an open game and rarely is there a blockade =)

Hey, if you're pretty serious about the game you oughta play a bunch of e5/e5 games from both sides. Learn from them, play double Q-pawn games as well. Get a good foundation and don't avoid any type of opening through fear or distrust.

it depends on your style and taste. If you want to get an equal position and from there try to outplay your opponent in the middle game, that's what e5 is usually like. I like the french defense , which lets white set up an e4 d4 center and black quickly attacks the center with pieces and pawns and tries to eventually get counterplay on both kingside and queenside. The sicilian is also one that goes for counterplay but I don't know much about it for black. Then there is the pirc and modern defense, which again give white a strong center but goes for a counterattack. These are your good options.

There is no good responce to e4. 1.e4 and white wins.
I know people are usually just joking when they say this, but why does it seem to only come up with e4? Is it because of the famous Fischer quote? Or is it because e4 is by-far the most popular first move? It would be interesting to know the origins of some of the notions commonly held among chess players.
LOL! Personally I prefer d4. Queens gambit declined sort of thing. But e4 is more common

C5 is the better responce. It allows black to get his pieces developed faster. With e5 black is usually on the defensive for much of the game. Although the game is ultimately decided in the mid game.

1.e4 c6, Caro-Kann is most soloid and easy to understand, good for beginner.
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Ruy Lopez, but who says that white plays 2.Nf3. If 1...e5 you have to know e.g. King's Gambit and many more openings, but 1...c6 then always Caro-Kann. I recommended.

There are several good responses to 1 e4. I think each player has to try several and see which one suits him better. While the sicilian scores best against 1 e4 its certainly not suited to everyone. I have been playing tournament chess more than 30 years and my main responses to 1 e4 have been Alekhines, French and Sicilian.
I am a amateur player and have seen many openings. I like the e4, e5 lines, but they tend to be bad for black, and the sicilian is to common and blockaded. Im looking for a good opening for black in a response of e4!
