notmtwain. in that particular game I agree I am looking at the main line. Instead of 3.d5 black playes 3.nc6 then 4 Bb5.
When White captures the knight on c6 with a bishop giving Black doubled pawns. E5 closing the center can allow White to attack the c5 pawn with b3, Ba3, and Na4
b0bnolan is correct, and there are other positional reasons for e5 too. There is a guy that plays this quite ofton and I use his games for studying this line. Here are a few.
