When does white look to push the e5 instead of f5 attacking the g6 pawn?  is there a position that justifies this move?

I think you already know the answer to this question even if your later moves were a problem.

notmtwain.  in that particular game I agree I am looking at the main line.  Instead of 3.d5 black playes 3.nc6 then 4 Bb5.

b0bnolan

When White captures the knight on c6 with a bishop giving Black doubled pawns. E5 closing the center can allow White to attack the c5 pawn with b3, Ba3, and Na4

b0bnolan is correct, and there are other positional reasons for e5 too. There is a guy that plays this quite ofton and I use his games for studying this line. Here are a few.
