are you trying to play black, or white? it sounds like you're asking about it as black.

as black, if I can ever learn the rousseau gambit AND the rest of a 1.e4 e5 repertoire well enough to FINLALLY kick the scandinavian to the curb, I want to play the jaenisch/schliemann gambit.

how are THOSE stats? the BEST white can do is ALMOST "equalize" (game stats) deep into the 4th most popular reply with lots of opportunities in the main lines. I want to play it myself, but just the rousseau gambit has proven too much of a move order nightmare for me to book up on without my head exploding

Ditch the Rousseau Gambit. That only works against clowns.

Play the Caro, you'll never see the Ruy Lopez again.

Hi! If you want to play solid, you could either try 3...a6 and go for a Closed Spanish variation (i.e. Zaitzev, Chigorin, Breyer...) or 3...Nf6 Berlin Defense. On the other hand, if you like complications you could play 3...a6 and go for the Marshall Attack or 3...Nf6 with the idea of 4...Bc5. Good luck!

@DrSpudnik does that make me a clown? I don't have a good record against it.

Just don't play players that are above 1000,they play the Ruy Lopez,Magnes Carlson also plays the Lopez.

I think over 1000 is a bit of a stretch. I’m 1200 and up until about a few weeks ago I played both e5 and the Sicilian against e4. I’ve encountered the Ruy Lopez maybe once

You may want to invest some time in learning the line that doesn't lead to a white advantage.

im of the minority that is partial to the old steinitz defense. black gets sturdy positions where white white often gives up the bishop pair for illusory pawn structure damage.

the early d4 lines which are supposed to be dangerous actually give black dynamic positions that are not ruy lopez like in flavor at all.

these are all healthy positions for black with low theory.

good thing clown are THE MAIN LINE! 40% losses to 57% wins in 448,821 1600-2000 games. that's a lotta clowns!

as a king's gambit player who despises the toothless scandinavian with its and every other opening that allows 2.e5 crap hater, it's what I long to play except for the insanity inducing move order nightmares
