How to handle with Pirc?

Sort:

Hello everyone!

I have one question. What's the main idea in Pirc defence (both colours)? How can white react on this?

I tried with Austrian attack but... In endgame I have a lot of weak pawns then. What to do?

Thanks for answers! :)

What to do to prevent Bg4?

Thanks!

i prefer to play e4, d4, f3, Be3, Qd2, 0-0-0 and then a kingside attack with h4, maybe g4

150 attack?

SeaOrchins

Attack on the kingside if you're White. Here is a sample game,,hope you enjoy.Cool

Of course, this strategy will not always work for white coz black isn't always stupid.Laughing

From what i have read current theory says that the 150 attack is manageable by black but the austrian attack is the best for white but against a player who studies their lines you need to study as well.

In SeaOrchin's game black is not taking advantage of white's play as much as they could do. Instead of Nbd7 and c6, they should try c5 and Nc6 to exert some greater control over the dark centre-squares. They can then also play e6 at some point to blunt white's bishop.

A flexible system against the Pirc is the "Classical Variation" with 4. Be2: http://www.chess.com/opening/eco/B07_Pirc_Defense_Classical_Variation

After 4...Bg7 White can choose between 5. Bg5 (which I've done quite nicely with against USCF-rated experts) or 5. h4!?

SeaOrchins

This is a game from two famous players...

Note: I copied it from chessgames.com. I annotated it myself. So, you can add what I'm missing...from the little girl with little brainTongue out

@SeaOrchins: nice annotations -- it's also nice to see I'm not so far off with my recommendation which can involve Bg5 though on move 5 instead of 4.  I mean if Fischer liked a system with Bg5 against the Pirc can you seriously argue against it?

CHCL

I usually use the Austrian attack. This idea was in Tal's book 'Attacking with Tal.'

@AnthonyBG That's a typical way to play the Bg5 line; get the bishop out there first then play f4 similar to the Austrian attack.  As for the game, it's all downhill for Black after 13...h6??

If you have lot of time to study, go for Australian attack, other wise try the 150 attack..

Never heard of it before.

The Pirc is one of those openings that I love to face as white. At my level no one plays it well. I think it's the sort of opening that requires a better tactical eye and positional sense than 1600s are capable of.

I generally just play the fianchetto lines:

1. e4 d6

2. d4 Nf6

3. Nc3 g6

4. g3 Bg7

5. Bg2 0-0

6. Nge2 e5

7. h3 Nc6

8. Be3

And white has a much easier game than black does.

As "Chess Opening Essentials" says "If black now takes on d4, he allows his opponent active play. If Black plays mechanically, white obtains an unpleasant initiative with moves such as 0-0 and f4."

I've found it a very easy position to play and have had good success with it.

Comparitively, the Bg5 lines, austrian attack, and classical variations all have several nuances that white must know depending on what black does. Those simply aren't present here.

Now, at levels above my own, I don't know how this line fares comapred to more ambitious one's. Its' one of the least choosen options for a reason. However, for those of us with day jobs, it avoids lots of theory for a very playable game.

Ferrarius

Kingpatzer, yes, I was thinking about it too :)
