can anybody out there please teach me how to play the petroff from black's side? especially after the moves 1e4 e5 2Nf3 Nf6 3Nxe5 d6 4Nxe4 Nc3 5Nxc3 dc? i'm really having a hard time defending the black side of this opening. thanks!

4. Nxe4?

The best way to learn the Petroff is grab a collection of the games, in the variation you want and go over them.  I'm assuming you are not looking for a book.  Try this link: http://jeanpaul.garnier.free.fr/indexen.htm

atahan T: yes, i should take the centre pawn back with Nxe4? oh, im sorry..it should have been 4Nf3 Nxe4 5Nc3 Nxc3 6dc...thanks for noticing.

This is one of the main lines i think: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5 d6 4. Nf3 Nxe4 5. Nc3 Nxc3 6. dxc3 Be7 7. Bf4 O-O 8. Qd2 Nd7 9. O-O-O Nc5

Most of my Petroff books are old, I've not kept up with the line for a while but the Karpov and Forintos were good for the time.  A current book I can't be sure of.

The Petroff defence by artur yusupov is pretty good I hear.

Try finding that one for Yusupov. Its a hefty tome that covers all lines and over 50 bucks at least. I like the petroff and have been unable to find a quality petroff book.

I think the book costs $100+

DrawMaster

$68.25 used on Amazon (US) and B&N, through a 3rd party. I'd have to be sure I'd be playing this for a while to drop nearly $70 on it.Undecided

Well it does cover almost every line in the petroff(or so I've heard)

Yes but how old is it?  Opening theory changes a lot in 5-10 years.

Try Khalifman's Opening for White According to Anand 1.e4. Volume 1. It has a great discussion on the Petroff and Ruy Lopez Berlin. it has an in depth analysis of it.

Forintos and Haag's The Petroff Defence is also good and old.

I'm a Petroff fanatic!

Perhaps but the ideas and plans will always probably be valid.

CarlMI

But most of these tomes specialize in variations not ideas.  If you want ideas you might as well get Fine's Ideas Behind theChess Openings from 50+ years ago.

I have been looking for Yusupov's Petroff book and I can only find used ones for $150-$200 from Amazon does anyone know where I can find other ones?

I found a review of the Yusupov book and it said it was a big waste of money and is only good for people who like just to read lines. Instead should I get the book from Karpov: Winning with the Petroff?
