I get the Philidor a lot it seems and there are some good plays to be had with the 3. d4 line. Black usually plays one of two replies here, 3... exd4 and the common 3... Bg4. Both lines are easily met by White here with one giving a great advantage to White after move 7, the other allowing for some major agressive play with the eventual play of f4. White has to be on guard for lines with ... f5, one of Philidor's original ideas with the defense as well but if prepared, White comes out with at least equality or a slightly to superior position with proper play.
These are just a couple lines White can go into from 3. d4
All in all, there are some interesting lines to the Philidor. Black can play 3. c6 as well (Hanham variation) but I would enjoy playing against Black there as there are some really fun lines to get into in that variation.

there are several publications, by John Nunn I beieve (or it might be Grahm Burgess in which they devote some time and material to White's replies to the Philidor as well.

I recently had the position from Morphy - Duke of Brunswick and Count Isouard in a tournament game but my opponent deviated with (after 7.Qb3) 7...Qc8? and lost in a few more moves. 3...Bg4 is probably not quite as bad as its reputation but 4...Bxf3? is terrible, Black does better to gambit a pawn with 4...Nc6.
3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 g6 5.c4 goes into a little-played line of the King's Indian defense while the main line 5.Nc3 Bg7 6.Be3 leads to a nice position for White assuming he plays Qd2 and castles queenside before playing f3. Early f3 moves lead to Black responding with ...d5! after which White does not gain an advantage according to the theory I know.
3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Bg7 (the Antoshin variation) is pretty solid but White has a safe edge with normal development e.g. 6.Bf4 with the plan of castling queenside.

About the Opera house game, like I have previously posted, it is pretty interesting for blitz or low-level tournament play to try 3...Bg4?! 4.dxe5 Nc6!? as a gambit.

I used to play this sometimes as black (with 4...Nd7 instead) but consistantly got into trouble after 5.exd6 Bxd6 6.Be2 Qe7 7.Nd4! Bxe2 8.Qxe2. The knight coming to f5 is a headache, and 8...g6 is somewhat artificial with the DSB on d6. Maybe 6...Ngf6 is a better try......
8...Nxd4 0-1
I am building my own opnening repertoire, and playing with white I'm trying quite a lot the Scotch game, but when my opponent sets the Philidor Defence, I not very sure of what to do.
Mainly I would like to know the strategical ideas for white when playing against the Philidor Defence. Thanks in advance.
