The idea behind the Pirc is the same as the Scandinavian and Alekhine, an attempt to out-theory your opponent at the expense of making a subpar opening move.

This is why the Sokolsky opening was invented. People were scared to play 1.e4 because they knew their opponent would play a goofy move and out-theory them, so they thought they'd just make the goofy move first and try to do the same thing to Black.

^ doesn't understand at least 4 openings, probably more.
