i have almost never played Queen's gambit as white. I read online that this is actually a fine opening for beginners. should i start learning it? also what are the main ideas behind this opening ,as for beginners, ideas matter more than remembering lines.

"I'm 800 rapid" ++ Then do not worry about openings.
You do not win or lose because of the opening, but because of tactical mistakes.
"should i go for Queen's gambit as white?" ++ No. What did you play until now?
It is generally better to stick to the same opening: so you gradually accumulate experience.
Each time you switch openings you lose more.
I do not recommend Queen's Gambit to beginners. It is a good opening, but already on move 2 you play a pawn instead of developing a piece into play.

"what are the main ideas"
With 1 d4 d5 2 c4 white challenges central pawn d5 with a wing pawn. Black has 3 main replies.

  1. Accept 2...dxc4. Then white will be able to seize the center with e4 and to recapture Bxc4.
  2. Decline 2...e6. That blocks the diagonal of Bc8.
  3. Slav Defence 2...c6. That obstructs the natural developing square for Nb8.

Yes play the queens gambit as white and black too,

I wouldn't recommend learning it if you haven't already. It's a 'good' opening, possibly one of the best for White, but only with perfect play. The Queen's Gambit is better for White than the Indian Defenses, but that isn't a great reason to play it, as you'll be a lot more likely to play against Indian Defenses, and they'll score better against you.

It’s good but it will probably take longer to finish a game than your typical 1.e4

I disagree with your last point as I used to play the queen's gambit when I was OP's level and I faced 1... d5 about 2 to 3 times as often as Nf6, so you will get the Queen's Gambit a lot when playing d4 at 800 level

There's an even better reason than "it won't work".

Playing for cheap tricks is a bad idea even in principle. If your opponent falls for your cheap trick, you'll win that one game, sure... but you will LEARN absolutely nothing from it because your opponent simply fell into a trap that you already knew. Your opponent will learn something from the game... he will now be aware of your trap, for one thing... but you will not.

Your opponent will improve as a chess player, from that game. You won't.
