Hello,

im rated about 1450 on rapid and looking for a new opening. I was experimenting with queen's gambit positions but then I came a cross the Catalan. Im not sure if I should look into it or stick to something else. Need suggestions ty happy.png

It's only complex if you try to win with it (like Kramnik). If you want a solid and boring position it's probably fine at any level.

hmm okay

you have easier choices than the catalan. the normal queen's gambit with bg5 or bf4 , and also cxd5. this last one is the most stable.

Who cares if it's "too complex"? It's just as complex for your opponents as it is for you! wink.png

I picked up the Catalan around your level and had great success with the open Catalan with dxc4, not so much vs the Closed Catalan with c6 and e6. You'll have to learn how to play super positionally to be able to win in those positions

It is fine. As long as you keep it simple with stuff like Ne5 to get pawn back, rooks on d1 and c1, queen belongs pretty much anywhere, it will be perfectly fine.

Me thinks that is not allowed on the public forums... on clubs though like mine... better delete that pic on the public forum kids are watching you know

Chess is complex, the Catalan is not particularly more complex than the Queen's Gambit or the London.

Why would you look for a new opening? Each time you change openings you lose more. Stick to what you play and try to play that better by learning from your mistakes.
