Is playing the Caro Kann good at high level?

I’m a young player. Against 1.e4, I only play the Caro Kann, as I don’t want to get such sharp positions like in the Sicilian. When OTB tournaments are back, should I keep playing the Caro Kann only, if I want to improve to 2500 rating? Or should I also play 1.e5 to make it harder for strong players to prepare against me?

In short words, is only playing the Caro Kann enough if I’m playing against masters?

Welp, I would think you should try a variety of openings. I'm not a Caro-Kann person, so I can't really speak for that.

So does that mean, I should try 1.e5 or 1.c5 as well? Because I don’t think Sicilian would suit my positional play style. Maybe e5?

If all the super GMs play it, it is probably good enough...

I find the caro kann to be rather rare, I hardly ever play against it, but use it every game. I did hear it get bashed on the Netflix series “queens gambit”, so that made me wonder. 😂

In addition, it is the first defense the great Gary kasporav learned at a young age (I believe I read, but fact check if needed), and if it was good enough for Mr. Kasporav..

I guess what we arrive at, is if you are a world champion, and are playing those caliber players, you don’t ask questions about what defensive openings work. Point being, yes it is a legitimate defense that was taught to and learnt by the best.

The queens gambit was played once in that show

Sicilian is better.

It most certainly is not, because you can’t prove either defense is better than the other

yankeewitdabigbrim

B1ZMARK, there was a subtle reference when Benny watts was at one of the opens in New York/vegas (or wherever), he claims it is “all pawns”. Now I do not know where that opinion originated, but may be a legit critique.

According to engines the modern defense is hot garbage. It’s not.

I don't think anyone in forums can help you with that, cuz almost all of us here are below 2500. If titled players play that opening, it's good.

OP the Caro-Kann is an opening to suite players of all temperaments . With either Black or White. Players can choose between sharp attacking continuations or more restrained strategic lines .
The Caro-Kann has the reputation of being one of Black’s soundest defenses to 1 e4

I would pick a GM and look at their games with the caro kann
for example:

Modern Defence is Garbage according to the amount of percentage of games that a the player who played modern defence won (very little Compared to playing other openings Like Sicilian)

it's still objectively equal. Doesn't mean it's garbage.

OP I would also advise you , to stop playing bullet chess , it will do absolutely nothing to help you improve your game .

Karpov played the Caro-Kann 257 times in rated tournament or match games.

He was World Champion for what... seventeen years?

Yes, thanks for the advice. It’s just addicting and hard not to.
